What a great dance!

Wow--wasn't it a wonderful dance last night?! And what a crowd--Martha said we nearly broke even, and would have if we hadn't had so many young folks--which is itself a blessing. And a challenge.... I thought everyone did very well, especially considering how many total beginners we had. Wonderful music, good calling, a friendly crowd, and CAKE--it doesn't get any better than that. Thanks to everyone for their efforts. For me, it really was a night to remember.

Hugs all around!

The night had some ups and downs for me. I cannot believe that we (I) didn't have dances planned for beginning dancers. Argggh! We learned that lesson ages ago, but got lulled by the attendance at the last three dances into expecting a (small) crowd of experienced dancers, and planned only for that.

So my dance went badly. Again. (expletive deleted) Maybe if I hadn't been so tired from going to Fairfield for the Friday night dance of their Bare Necessities/Joseph Pimentel weekend, I could have thought better on my feet, but I just didn't say or do the right thing to get new people to simply cross, cast, and do a half figure of eight. I'll be thinking about how to do that with new people (I'm sure it can be done) but I sure couldn't think of how to do it that night.

It's also odd, but when I'm in caller mode, I also have trouble getting my mind completely back into fiddle mode. What the heck is this thing in my hand, this...violin? What do you mean, you have to put your fingers down in the right place or it's out of tune? Jeez, who invented this thing?

But the rest of the dances seemed to go mostly okay, and there sure were a lot of smiles out there.

And when Missy (Missy!) thanked me for my efforts at pushing this little peanut down the road, well, I think I remember feeling sort of open-mouthed and unbelieving, like a little kid at his first birthday party when he suddenly figures out that all the hoopla is for him. Huh? Me? What? Wow! I'm still absorbing it.

So, kudos all around for doing a better job with new dancers than I did, and particular thanks to all the folks who told their friends about the dance so that the new folks came! We'll be ready for them next time, you can bet!

And congratulations to all the people who had such good things to celebrate. It was an early Thanksgiving, complete with incredible cake! Oh, the chocolate! Oh, the raspberry filling! Oh, the whipped cream icing! And oh, the original honoree!
